Blazer Blog

Boy, are we WAY overdue in getting this started. After all these years of having a website and the ability to talk with Blair grads on a regular basis (via email, etc.), it’s long past time to begin some all Blair, all the time communications.

As we noted in our last issue of the Alumni News, it’s not hard to find things to write about. A quarterly newsletter is  great for providing some once-in-a-while nostalgia, but there are tens of thousand of stories that should be of interest to Blazers, from their schoolmates to the faculty to the school itself to the many memories of Silver Spring and Montgomery County. We’ll bring you more of them through this blog and a new electronic newsletter that will be coming your way shortly.

The great thing about electronic communications and social media is the ability to get ideas and information out as quickly as possible. We can also send you some previews of upcoming events and what we’ll be featuring in the next Alumni News.

In this next (Winter, 2012) issue we’ll be starting our review of the past 25 years of the Alumni Association with a few blasts from the past. We’ll be doing a little “Old Blair, New Blair” feature on some current and former faculty members, and some older and some more recent graduates.

The current faculty member we interviewed this time was Rita Boule, Blair’s first female Athletic Director.  I was taken right away by how young she is, and how much she is into Blair’s history and traditions. She has some pretty big shoes to fill-the last two Athletic Directors(Nelson Kobren and Dale Miller) were both Blair institutions who served in that role for more than 20 years.

I had to go to jolly old England to interview the former faculty member, Paul Ganz. Paul taught at Blair in the late 50’s through the 60’s and has some great memories of Blair, just as many of us have great memories of him.

On an organizational note, we do need to let you know that our proposed Blair Bowling Bash that was tentatively set for March 31 has been postponed. We’ll let you know when it has been rescheduled.

Here’s what everyone can do to help us expand our Blair network and make the Alumni Association the organization of choice for staying in touch with classmates and helping reunion committees.

  1. Register on our website at www.blairalumni.org. Alumni association members get access to the Silver Chips, Silverlogues, and Alumni News Archives, and it helps us stay in touch with thousands of Blazers.
  2. Get on those “other” alumni sites (like Classmates, etc.) and contact your class members to tell them to be sure to join the Alumni association, too.
  3. Use Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social media outlets to let classmates know about the Alumni Association (and encourage them to join).

Finally, if you are still in the DC Metro area, go to the school’s website at www.mbhs.edu and keep up on what’s happening at Blair. Attend some athletic events or concerts, and support the school’s community outreach efforts.

We’re all Blazers, red and white, through and through. Let’s keep the Blair family together.
